SHERMAN, Texas ... Monica
Martinez of Mineola, Texas, was named Austin College’s
Altrusa Outstanding Senior Woman at the Student Affairs
Leadership Banquet. The annual event recognizes students and
organizations that have made significant contributions to
the Austin College community through scholarship, campus
involvement, and service.
The Altrusa Senior Woman Award
is presented to a graduating senior identified for
scholastic achievements as well as co-curricular
involvement, including membership and leadership in student
organizations, committees, or athletic teams, and
participation in performing arts and intramurals and
community service.
The Senior Woman award is
sponsored by the Sherman chapter of Altrusa International,
an international women’s service club.

Altrusa Outstanding Senior
Women
Monica Martinez,
completing double majors in international
relations and religion/philosophy, was the 2008
student body president, leading Student Assembly
in a number of objectives. She has been involved
in a wide variety of activities across campus,
including Omega Zeta social sorority, Campus
Activities Board, and Senior Committee. She has
participated in several Model United Nations
competitions in Chicago and New York City and
participated in a conference in China in
November 2008. She also was elected as
Homecoming queen in 2007. She was selected as a
Hatton W. Sumner Scholar in Political Science
and was consistently named to the Dean’s List.
Monica also
received the Henry Bucher Global Citizen Award
for commitment to service and study in a global
context. Monica was a 2008 Global Outreach
Fellow and served at the Rafiki Foundation
orphanage in Nigeria. She received a 2005 Lily
Service Grant for a project in El Salvador and
was part of a service team to volunteer in that
country. She also was a coordinator for the 2008
spring break service trip to Guatemala. During
her college experience, Monica also visited
Australia, China, Mali, Mexico, Senegal, Taiwan,
and Turkey. The Bucher Award honors the legacy
of Henry Bucher, who served as Austin College
chaplain for two decades before retiring in
2004. Monica also was named to Who’s Who Among
Students in American Universities and Colleges.
